Award Winning Retrofit & Reuse
The re-purposing of the former factory for Herman Miller to the new Schools of Art and Design for Bath Spa University has won in the Structural Steel Design Awards 2020.
Working with Grimshaw Architects a light touch to the existing structural frame with the raising of the roof with steel vierendeels combined with new freestanding structures for a glazed roof top pavilion, teaching mezzanines, plant and workshop space has provided an exceptional teaching facility for the school of Art.
The Judges’ noted: ‘This project involved a major re-purposing of a Grade II-listed industrial building, thus validating key concepts of the original 1970s design - adaptability and sustainability. Structural additions were separated from the existing, requiring careful installation and the façade sensitively upgraded to improve performance. The result is a building of exceptional quality ideally suited to its new use’.
